Maine Coon FAQs

The health and well-being of our kittens are at the heart of everything we do. Each Maine Coon kitten is raised with attentive daily care and receives appropriate veterinary care before going home, including veterinary examinations, age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming, and microchipping.

Our breeding cats are also carefully selected and undergo health screening as part of our responsible breeding program. Our goal is to give every kitten the healthiest possible start while closely monitoring their growth, development, temperament, and overall well-being from birth until they leave for their new home.

Our relationship with our families doesn’t end when a kitten goes home. We’re here to provide ongoing guidance and support throughout your Maine Coon’s life.

Whether you have questions about transitioning into a new home, nutrition, grooming, behavior, development, or simply want to share an update, we’re always happy to hear from you.

Indiana Giant Maine Coons is located approximately 15 minutes southeast of Indianapolis, Indiana. Our cats and kittens are raised in our home, where we can provide them with attentive daily care, socialization, and a comfortable family environment.

For the health, safety, and security of our cats, kittens, and home, Indiana Giant Maine Coons operates as a closed cattery prior to reservation. We do not offer general cattery visits or in-home visits before a specific kitten has been reserved.

Once you have reserved a specific Maine Coon kitten, we are happy to welcome you for a scheduled visit when your kitten is approximately 8–10 weeks old and has received their first vaccination. This gives you an opportunity to spend time with your kitten, see how they are developing, and begin building that connection before they come home.

We also provide regular photos and updates, offer a 24/7 live cattery stream, and are happy to arrange FaceTime or video calls with families who have reserved a specific kitten.

All visits are scheduled in advance so we can maintain a calm, healthy environment for our cats and kittens.

Breeding rights are offered on a very limited and selective basis to established, ethical, registered catteries whose values, care standards, breeding practices, and long-term goals closely align with our own.

Our priority is always the health and well-being of our cats and kittens, along with the responsible preservation of the Maine Coon breed. Breeding placements are considered carefully and individually, with the expectation that each cat will be raised responsibly, receive appropriate health care and testing, and contribute positively to future generations of Maine Coons.

Because of the responsibility involved, breeding rights are never guaranteed and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Yes. Every kitten is covered by our two-year health guarantee for life-threatening congenital defects.

If a covered congenital condition is diagnosed within the first two years, our guarantee provides for a replacement kitten or refund of the purchase price, in accordance with the terms of our written agreement.

We also ask that families maintain appropriate veterinary care, vaccinations, and routine wellness care to help protect their kitten’s long-term health and well-being.

Yes. Every Maine Coon kitten goes home microchipped and enrolled with AKC Reunite’s lifetime recovery service.

For an added layer of protection, Indiana Giant Maine Coons remains listed as a secondary contact on the microchip. If one of our kittens is ever lost and the family cannot immediately be reached, there is another permanent point of contact available to help reunite them.

We consider microchipping an important part of helping protect our kittens throughout their lives.

Every kitten is enrolled with AKC Reunite, a lifetime pet recovery service that helps reunite lost pets with their families.

Your kitten’s microchip registration includes lifetime enrollment with no annual renewal fee, along with access to AKC Reunite’s recovery network if your kitten is ever lost.

Indiana Giant Maine Coons remains listed as a secondary contact on the microchip registration, providing an additional point of contact if your family cannot immediately be reached.

We include this as part of every kitten’s going-home package because permanent identification and lifetime recovery support are an important part of responsible ownership.

Once your application and required video call have been completed and approved, you will be added to our general waitlist. There is no deposit required to join or remain on the general waitlist.

When we are ready to accept reservations for a specific litter, everyone on the general waitlist will be notified by email in advance. The email will include the date and time reservations will officially open, along with details about the upcoming litter.

Once reservations open, available spots are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To keep the process fair for everyone, only responses received after the announced opening time will be considered.

Families who successfully secure an available reservation spot will be contacted promptly and required to submit a $100 litter reservation deposit to confirm their place for that specific litter.

Being on the general waitlist does not guarantee a kitten or reservation spot. It ensures that every approved family receives advance notice and the same opportunity to respond when litter reservations become available.

Families who have secured a litter reservation will be contacted when the kittens are approximately 4–6 weeks old and we begin the process of reserving specific kittens.

Once you select your kitten, an additional $1,000 non-refundable specific-kitten reservation deposit is required within 3 days to secure that kitten.

Both the earlier $100 litter reservation deposit and the $1,000 specific-kitten reservation deposit are applied toward the final purchase price of your kitten.

If your circumstances or timing change, reservation deposits may be transferred to a future litter with communication and approval.

No. Once your application and required video call have been completed and approved, you will be added to our general waitlist at no cost.

A deposit is only required if you successfully secure an available reservation spot for a specific litter. At that time, a $100 non-refundable litter reservation deposit is required to confirm your place for that litter.

The $100 litter reservation deposit is applied toward the final purchase price of your kitten.

Being on the general waitlist does not guarantee a reservation or kitten. It simply ensures that you receive advance notice when litter reservations open and have the same opportunity to respond as other approved families.

Yes. Video calls are an important part of both our application process and the experience we provide to families after a kitten has been reserved.

As part of the application process, our required video call is completed through Google Meet. This gives us an opportunity to meet one another, answer questions, discuss our program and placement process, and make sure we’re a good fit for each other.

Once you have reserved a specific Maine Coon kitten, we’re happy to arrange FaceTime or video calls so you can see your kitten, watch their development, and stay connected while you wait for them to come home.

We love giving our families opportunities to be part of their kitten’s journey long before pickup day.

We entrust the veterinary care of our cats and kittens to Hillview Veterinary in Franklin, Indiana. Their team has become an important part of our breeding program and works with us to support the health and well-being of our Maine Coons throughout every stage of life.

Dr. Clarke and Dr. Blair are familiar with our cats and our program, and we greatly value the care, guidance, and veterinary support they provide.

Maine Coons are a naturally large, slow-maturing breed, but adult size can vary considerably from one cat to another.

Genetics, sex, bone structure, nutrition, overall health, and individual development all play a role in a kitten’s eventual size. We carefully select for strong structure, substantial bone, healthy growth, and overall balance, but we do not breed for extreme size at the expense of health or temperament.

While we can discuss the size, structure, and growth patterns seen within a kitten’s pedigree, no responsible breeder can guarantee an exact adult weight or final size.

Our focus is on raising healthy, well-balanced Maine Coons with the structure, temperament, and presence the breed is known for.

Because adult size cannot be predicted with complete accuracy while a kitten is still developing. Even kittens from the same parents and litter can mature at different rates and reach noticeably different adult sizes.

Genetics provide useful insight, but factors such as sex, bone structure, growth pattern, nutrition, overall health, and individual development all influence a Maine Coon’s final weight and frame.

We can share information about a kitten’s parents, pedigree, current development, and the general size trends within our lines, but we will never promise a specific adult weight or size that cannot be guaranteed responsibly.

Our priority is to produce healthy, substantial, well-balanced Maine Coons with strong structure and excellent temperament—not simply the largest cat possible.
